Saveur and Fruit Paradise

Popped by Saveur the other day with a bunch of friends.
Have been hearing great reviews about the place, and indeed it did not disappoint. This is a great place to go for cheap french food, but go there early to get a spot.

We tried a variety of the dishes and indeed were satisfied.
Without further ado, let me let the pictures do the talking. :)

Angel Hair Pasta with Sherry minced Pork and Sakura Ebi
The appetiser sized pasta was the cheapest dish on the menu. At $3.90, the portion was decent and the flavours came together nicely without being overpowering.

Pan Fried Foie Gras with Lentils and Pickled Onions
The foie gras was slightly firm in texture, yet slightly melting in your mouth. The lentils felt a bit mushy, but this dish was quickly wiped up by my friends. haha

Confit of Duck with Orange Segments and Saute Shittake
The skin of the duck was crispy and the meat had just the right texture. Now I understand why they say this is a must try :)

Beef Bourguignon with Root Vegetables and Mixed Greens
This was my dish. I loved how the beef was tender and pulled apart easily with just your fork. The meat was not dry and full of flavour with every mouthful. And I simply adored the gratin potatoes that came with it. It was creamy and had a nice bite to it, complementing the dish very well.

Crispy Pork Belly with Poached Egg and Diced Vegetables
The pork belly was crispy, and the layer of belly fat was appropriate without being overwhelming. Was disappointed with their version of poached eggs though, as we all expected the well known type that was often seen in other restaurants.

Chicken Roulade with Foie Gras Stuffing and Basmati Rice
The chicken in this dish was tender and juicy, and there was a hint of the foie gras with each bite, which complemented and not overwhelmed the flavours, which was good. haha But we had a hard time trying to guess what the foam was though. The rice had a nice buttery finish and made this dish more filling.

The total bill was pretty affordable for the type of dishes you get to try, but we decided to give the desserts a miss as they didn't look very impressive. If you are interested, do head down early as they do not take reservations.

For desserts, we decided to head over to Fruit Paradise (Raffles City) for some tarts.

I shared the Baked Chocolate Montblanc with a friend, and I would say the taste is only average. The chestnut taste was faint and did not really stand out to me. Perhaps I was expecting a nice roasted chestnut smell to enhance the taste.

My friends tried some Chocolate Orange Tart, which they had so swiftly started on, that I wasn't able to capture any pics of it. That tart was not bad as it was fresh and luxurious at the same time. May order it to try the next time. :)

They say that a cafe/restaurant can be rated based on the number of reviews. This place my friends is filled with celebrity photos on their walls!

A pretty famous bak kut teh place, this joint can boast of their popularity based on the number of celebrities who have dined here. Once you step in, you will be faced with countless pictures of famous people from then and now.

We popped by the other day as we were craving some hot bak kut teh soup to chase away the blues of the upcoming Monday.

First up, we ordered a serving of Kailan. These veg were a tad dry, but one of the available options if you need some vegetables in your diet.

Of course, the main star here was the bak kut teh! The soup was piping hot when served, and had a peppery taste to it. Very yummy to slurp down, or for dipping the crispy you tiao to soak up the stock. You can also ask for more soup when you are done drinking up. We did :)
The meat itself had a bite to it, while still remaining soft and easy to pull off cleanly from the bone..

We also decided to give their Braised Pork Leg (aka Ter Ka) a try. The meat was tender and had an appropriate amount of fat, and the sauce was tasty too.

On the overall, the food would be good for sharing, but not very healthy to have alone, especially the Braised Pork Leg.
Sharing also means you get to try more food options :)

Tunglok Seafood

Warning: Photo heavy post! Be prepared to drool :)

Went out with my family to makan a good meal the other day. Tunglok was having a mega national day promo, and of course we wouldn't miss out :)

We started off with a huge serving of Salmon Sashimi. All the slices were thick and juicy and fresh! Super yumms for a salmon lover like me :)

Next, we tried the Crispy Silver Bait Sushi roll. It was a ok only. Nothing memorable.

Featured below is their Coffee Pork Ribs with Almond..

And not forgetting their Deep Fried Prawns with Wasabi-Mayo Sauce... The prawns were super huge, fresh and crunchy!! Definitely bite worthy!

We also had the bean curd with fish maw..

And what dinner would be complete without a good serving of vegetables! In this case, Sambal Kangkong!!

And Beef with sliced garlic..

My cousin wanted to try the Oyster steamed with Garlic. I stayed away from these though. Not an oyster fan, but these oysters were huge!

But the dinner wasn't over.. We still had Lobster Noodles..

And White Pepper Crab.. (You must be thinking how we stomach all these food. Hahah)

But finally, the meal ended with Yam Paste with Gingko Nut! I was so stuffed that I passed on this and just tried a mouthful from my Mum's bowl..

Onion breath... What say u?

If you have not tried Tony Roma's Onion Loaf, my dear, you are missing out on something good here..

The onion loaf here is simply yummy-licious! Filled from top to toe with onion goodness, the loaf is made 100% out of fresh rings of onion, coated in the special secret recipe batter, and fried/baked till crispy. In addition, lather on some of the accompanying sauce and you are in for a treat!

Why I say this dish is awesome? It has won over even someone like me who doesn't eat onions, at all.... :)

Half a loaf is good for sharing between 2 hungry people, or 3 ladies. And it's only $9.90!! :)

Make sure to share the onionly love with your accompanying friends so no one can complain about your onion breath:)

Another round of scrambled..

Did another round of scrambled eggs today. This time they turned out perfectly! :)

For the crossiants, I just dry toasted them in the pan. There is no need for butter or oil, as the crossiants already have a good amount of butter in them. Need to watch the heat the next time as these are kinda too brown already.

Enjoy! :)

Bbuble K

Popped by Bbuble K the other day to check out the surroundings as I heard it was a new cafe in the neighbourhood.

Fronted by 2 mascots of a super piggy called "Zhen Zhu" and this chick called "Ji Dan Zai", the whole concept of the cafe revolves around the story of both of them.

The decor was nice and refreshing, though the chairs looked like they have seen better days.
Didn't manage to capture pics of the surroundings though.

We ordered the basic set which included a 'Ji Dan Zai', which is this egg waffle, especially famous in HK, and a normal milk tea.

Taste wise wasn't super memorable, but it definitely was a different experience, especially with such a huge bubbletea served in a carafe. In addition, as the serving container was so tall, it came with this cute pearl scooping spoon so that you could get to all the pearls at the bottom. Cute! :)

Breakfast is Served!

Breakfast mood is here:)

Got in the mood to make a good hearty breakfast today. Rummaging through my fridge, I decided I'd go with a few of my favourite food items..

Hence, on the menu:
Grilled Cheese Sandwich
Scrambled Eggs
Chicken Chipolata

Grilled Cheese Sandwich:
Ingredients -
2 slices of bread
Butter
Mayo
Honey Mustard
3 slices of Cheese

For the grilled cheese sandwich, I tried a different take from my usual, and spread mayo thinly on one slice, and honey mustard on the other slice of bread. Sandwich 3 slices of cheese in between.

For a nice golden brown look, add some butter into the frying pan, for mine I happened to be craving garlic bread, so i just used garlic butter in mine. Place the sandwich in the pan and leave it on its side for 3 mins each. This will give you a nice, crunchy and melty grilled cheese sandwich :)

Slice just before serving, and you can drool at the oozing cheese.

Chipolata:
Ingredients -
2 chicken chipolata sausages
Butter/oil

For the chipolata, simply add a little butter or oil in the pan and lightly brown the sausages.

Scrambled eggs:
Ingredients -
2 eggs
Butter
Salt & Pepper

To make the scrambled eggs, dont whip the eggs, and do not season first. It results in watery eggs as the seasoning breaks down the eggs (according to Gordon Ramsay).

Add eggs to pan and a generous knob of butter. Place onto med heat and start mixing it with a spatula. Keep stirring and it will cook on its own. When it's about 80% cooked with just small wet portions left, take it off the heat, but keep stirring.

*note: my eggs look a little dry and whitish, as I stepped away for a while and this is what I came back to, so really watch your eggs to make sure they do not overcook. Thankfully mine was still salvaged and it was still moist and yummy.

Finally, plate up and season your food with salt and pepper to your own preference.

I prepared the food in the same order so I could use the same frying pan to minimize clean up. :P

To note:
This is quite a hearty breakfast, so it's ok for an occasional treat, but not an everyday affair.

For a healthier option, instead of grilled cheese sandwich, just make one simple toast or garlic bread.

And add some fresh vegetables on the side for a good balance. The difference that lettuce and some tomatoes would make:)

Ivins Nonya Specialities

Popped by Ivin's for lunch the other day with Karen.

As the name says it, this cozy little restaurant serves up a good variety of Nonya delights for Babi Ponteh and Ayam Buah Keluak, to the yummy desserts consisting of various kueh kuehs like Kueh Dadar..

It all boils down to the little details, adding to the whole experience.
Check out all the details :)
It's all about the details for Ivin's. Everything from the decor to their dishes to the menu....
Even their menu design has a super nonya feel!!

We decided to go with the Sambal Kang Kong and the Curry Ayam, to share between the both of us. The portions definitely were more than enough for two girls, and it did not disappoint at all.
Sambal Kang Kong
Curry Ayam
The sambal kang kong had all the spice and kick in it, and it wasn't dry at all. Just how I love my kangkong, with all the juicy goodness.

The curry ayam was a tad spicy, but still reasonable, and the chicken portions were aplenty. I believe we both ate our fill and there was still left over. Even the potatoes were nice and soft, and the curry itself was slurp-a-licious.

One last look at the whole place:)

Last Monday Night..

Last night a group of us surprised Master with a cake for his birthday :)

Happy Birthday Master!
So after that, we were all feeling a little hungry and decided to head down to Ice Edge Cafe in Kovan.
Located along Simon Road, this place is feels like a mini Holland Village..
Specialising in premium self-made gelato, Ice Edge Cafe also offers a variety of food items on the menu.
Strawberry Ice Cream - Check out the cute Strawberry flowers :)
Anyone up for a shot of Bailey's?
Totally love the way they displayed their gelato.. So creative!!

And these are the chicken wings we had last night at Ice Edge Cafe.. Yummy!!
The chicken wings were fried to crispy perfection! Super crispy on the outside and moist goodness on the inside!
And these are the finger licking good buffalo wings... Literally finger licking good that you wanna get every last bit:)

Overall, it was definitely a good time spent with good food and good company! :)
